The Bailie Education and Culture Association of New Zealand Limited is a Cultural-Focused Social Enterprise dedicated to perpetuating and promoting the spirit and legacy of Rewi Alley, a distinguished international friend from New Zealand, to enhance and strengthen educational and cultural exchanges between New Zealand and China.

Historical Background – 协会背景
Named after the Bailie School founded by Rewi Alley, the Bailie Education and Culture Association of New Zealand pays tribute to this internationalist who spent nearly sixty years in China contributing significantly to the Chinese people’s liberation and the construction of New China. The Bailie School established by Rewi Alley in the 1930s embraced the educational philosophy of “hands and mind together, creating and analyzing,” aimed at developing the vocational skills and creativity of Chinese youth. This philosophy was highly praised by General Secretary Xi Jinping during his 2019 visit to the Shandan Bailie School, and it continues to be of significant relevance to contemporary vocational education.

During his decades in China, Alley was deeply loved by the Chinese people and built profound friendships with older generation Chinese leaders such as Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and Deng Xiaoping. Chairman Mao referred to him as “an old friend of the Chinese people,” and leaders like Premier Zhou and Deng Xiaoping frequently invited him to significant events and organized special celebrations for his birthdays.

Deng Xiaoping hosted a grand banquet in the Great Hall of the People for Alley’s 80th birthday, a gesture of high respect. The goal is to cultivate more “Rewi Alleys” of the new era, allowing the tree of friendship between New Zealand and China to flourish and endure for generations.
